Cultural and linguistic values of the Great Silk Road

Summer school

From July 12-20, 2023, the National University of Uzbekistan named after Mirzo Ulugbek hosted an international summer school titled “Cultural and Linguistic Values of the Great Silk Road.” This event marked a significant first for Uzbek higher education, bringing together 16 English-speaking students from leading universities across Europe and Asia, including the University of Warwick, University of Poitiers, University of Mons, Obuda University, Korea University, Baku State University, Kazan Federal University, and Tomsk State University.

During the summer school, participants immersed themselves in Uzbek language and culture, exploring the country’s scientific and touristic potential. The program included lectures on topics such as the history of Uzbekistan, its geography, key attractions in Tashkent, national holidays, traditional costumes, and various forms of Uzbek art. Interactive discussions and games enriched the learning experience, fostering a deeper understanding of Uzbekistan’s historical significance.

Jumabayeva Venera from the Department of English Philology organized a hands-on session where students could explore over ten types of national costumes. Additionally, Professor N. Abdurakhmonova led a lecture on the “Practical Possibilities of the Uzbek Language,” providing insights into its dialects, vocabulary, national values, and grammar.

To enhance their cultural experience, students visited several historical sites, including the Museum of Applied Arts, Adiblar Hiyoboni, and the Hasti Imam complex in Tashkent. These excursions introduced them to the rich tapestry of Uzbekistan’s history and its renowned figures, such as Babur, Hamid Olimjon, Ogahi, Berdaq, Muqimi, Furqat, Behbudi, Avloni, Cholpon, Qadiri and Zulfiya.

In order to show the tourism potential of Uzbekistan, the participants visited Samarkand, one of the most beautiful cities of Uzbekistan. In the first part of the day, the participants of the summer school visited Amir Temur’s mausoleum, Registan ensemble – Sherdor, Tillakori and Mirzo Ulugbek madrasas. Seeing the historical monuments, they were once again convinced that Uzbekistan has a rich past.

In the afternoon, the participants visited the Mirzo Ulugbek observatory and the Shokhi Zinda shrine, got to know the unique structures built by our ancestors, and returned with a world of good impressions. They also visited the Oktash mountains in Tashkent region. The students started the trip with a visit to the Chinorkent complex. They climbed to the top of the mountain on the gallows road and enjoyed the beautiful view of the Tashkent region.

The summer school concluded with a certificate-awarding ceremony, recognizing the contributions of both participants and educators under the theme “Cultural and Linguistic Values on the Great Silk Road.”
