NUU Launches its First-Ever “NUU Public Talks” series on Sustainability

The NUU Public Talks series kicked off on October 31, 2024, marking a new chapter for the National University of Uzbekistan as it brings students, faculty, and the public together to discuss critical issues aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Initiated by the Department of Strategic Development and International Rankings, this weekly event series is designed to foster dialogue and engagement with topics that impact both local and global communities. 

The inaugural session, titled “Bills and Initiatives of the Republic of Uzbekistan Designed to Achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals,” was led by Turanov Diyorbek, a 3rd-year Jurisprudence: Business Law student.

The event began with a warm welcome from the Vice-Rector for International Relations Raima Shirinova, who highlighted the essential role of youth in contributing to sustainable development: "Each young person should be involved and engaged in these discussions to make meaningful impacts."

"Our goal with this series is to spark conversations that encourage students to think critically and engage with both local and global issues, especially around sustainability. I believe awareness and action start here, among young minds ready to tackle today’s most pressing challenges."

Diyorbek discussed specific legislative efforts, such as policies aimed at reducing carbon emissions, promoting renewable energy, and improving public health. He emphasized that these initiatives align not only with global goals but are also tailored to Uzbekistan’s unique challenges and opportunities.

Diyorbek spoke about the main legislative initiatives that contribute to sustainable development. It is the “Sustainable Development Strategy”, “Law on Environmental Protection”, “Law on Small Business Development” and “Law on Education” in the economic development of Uzbekistan. emphasized its importance in ensuring growth and ecological stability.

“The SDGs provide a roadmap for a sustainable future, and our laws must serve as the foundation upon which this future is built,” he stated. “As students and young professionals, we must stay informed and actively participate in shaping policies that protect both our environment and society.”

Also, Gulasal Rofiyeva, emphasized the responsibility of all of us as consumers, that the principles of "sustainable and rational consumption" are closely related to each other, and rational use of resources and wastage. he noted the necessity of reduction and the importance of education in this regard.

Each week, NUU Public Talks will offer an open forum for students and faculty to share their insights and research across diverse topics related to SDGs, from climate action and economic development to social equity and public health. All are welcome to join, engage, and even take the stage to share their perspectives.

This Public Talks initiative is a valuable platform for driving positive change, fostering critical thinking, and inspiring actions that support a more sustainable and resilient future. As the series continues, NUU aims to nurture a community of thoughtful, solution-driven individuals ready to impact local and global sustainability.
