Navigating New Environments: Mental Training for International Students at the National University of Uzbekistan

Studying abroad is an exciting and enriching experience, offering students the opportunity to immerse themselves in new cultures, languages, and ways of life. However, it can also be a challenging transition, particularly for international students who may find themselves navigating unfamiliar environments far from home. Recognizing the unique needs of this diverse student population, the National University of Uzbekistan has implemented a series of mental training programs designed to support international students as they adjust to life on campus and in a new country.
Led by a team of experienced psychologists and counselors, these mental training sessions provide international students with the tools and strategies they need to cope with the challenges of living and studying in a foreign environment. From cultural adjustment to academic stress, the sessions cover a range of topics aimed at promoting emotional well-being and resilience.
“We understand that studying abroad can be both exhilarating and daunting,” explains Head Psychologist Akhtamova Nilufar. “Our goal is to provide international students with the support they need to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally during their time at the National University of Uzbekistan.”
One of the key components of the mental training program is cultural orientation, which helps international students navigate the cultural nuances and expectations of their new surroundings. Through workshops and interactive activities, students learn about Uzbekistan’s rich history, customs, and traditions, gaining a deeper appreciation for the country they now call home.
“We believe that understanding and respecting the culture of your host country is essential for a successful study abroad experience,” says Nilufar. “By providing cultural orientation, we aim to facilitate smoother integration and foster meaningful cross-cultural connections among our international students.”
In addition to cultural orientation, the mental training sessions also focus on practical skills such as stress management, time management, and communication. International students learn how to effectively cope with academic pressures, balance their workload, and communicate their needs and concerns to faculty and staff.
“We recognize that adjusting to a new academic system can be challenging, especially for students coming from different educational backgrounds,” explains Nilufar. “Our mental training sessions provide international students with the tools and resources they need to succeed academically while maintaining their mental and emotional well-being.”
Feedback from participants has been overwhelmingly positive, with many international students expressing gratitude for the support and guidance they have received through the mental training program.
“These sessions have been incredibly helpful in easing my transition to life in Uzbekistan,” says one international student. “I feel more confident and prepared to face the challenges ahead thanks to the practical skills and insights I’ve gained.”
As the National University of Uzbekistan continues to prioritize the well-being of its international student community, the mental training program serves as a testament to the university’s commitment to fostering a supportive and inclusive campus environment. By providing international students with the tools and support they need to thrive in their new environment, the university is helping to ensure that every student has the opportunity to reach their full potential, both academically and personally.
