National University of Uzbekistan Launches New Project to Promote the Art of Maqom Among Youth

The National University of Uzbekistan named after Mirzo Ulugbek has embarked on a significant new cultural initiative dedicated to promoting and popularizing the timeless tradition of maqom art — one of humanity’s brightest intellectual and spiritual achievements. The project is designed not only to preserve this invaluable musical heritage but also to ensure its transmission to younger generations in meaningful and innovative ways.

Maqom is recognized as a unique synthesis of music, poetry, and philosophy, embodying centuries of the Uzbek people’s spiritual world, aesthetic sensibilities, and intellectual depth. This art form transcends mere musical performance, serving as a profound cultural code that reflects the moral, emotional, and historical consciousness of society.

In 2003, UNESCO included maqom traditions in its list of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, acknowledging its universal cultural value. Today, maqom continues to be studied and performed not only in Uzbekistan but also across the world as an enduring testament to the richness of Eastern civilization.
