On May 3rd, in observance of World Press Freedom Day, a roundtable discussion titled “New Uzbekistan Journalism: Freedom of Speech and Legislative Practices” was held in collaboration between the Journalism Faculty of the National University of Uzbekistan and the Committee on Information Policy and Ensuring Transparency in Government Bodies of the Senate of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The event focused on the current state of freedom of speech, the press, and information policy, as well as the laws and practices designed to protect the rights of journalists and citizens.
The discussion thoroughly explored critical issues related to Uzbekistan’s information policy, ensuring transparency in government institutions, and safeguarding freedom of speech. Participants particularly examined the role of freedom of speech in societal development, the interactions between government and public organizations, and the significant influence of media and blogs in shaping public discourse.
The event also addressed recent updates to legislation aimed at securing freedom of information and the efforts made to implement these laws effectively. The introduction of new laws, innovative approaches to protecting freedom of speech, and the resolution of legal challenges concerning journalists and media outlets were highlighted as essential steps forward. In particular, it was stressed that media representatives must operate in line with international standards and ensure legal protection while defending freedom of speech.
A key trend discussed was the growing influence of private media and blogs. These platforms are increasingly vital for quickly and effectively communicating emerging decisions and issues to the public. It was emphasized that private media and blogs play a significant role in exposing critical issues such as corruption, social inequality, and information shortages, and they have a strong impact on addressing these societal challenges.
At the conclusion of the event, several proposals were made to foster more effective collaboration between the public, government bodies, and journalists, as well as to further strengthen the principles of information freedom.
