Integrating Sustainable Development Goals into Language Education
At the Faculty of Foreign Philology, Department of Foreign Language and Literature, Professor Dildora Dedakhanova conducted a special lesson on Material Evaluation, focusing on how English language teaching materials can be developed and assessed through the lens of the Sustainable Development Goals.
The main objective of the lesson was to help students critically analyze how teaching materials not only promote linguistic competence but also reflect broader educational and social values such as equality, sustainability, and global awareness.
To set the foundation, students revisited Bloom’s Taxonomy, discussing how different levels of cognitive skills — remembering, understanding, applying, analyzing, evaluating, and creating — can guide effective material design and evaluation. This framework encouraged students to think beyond surface-level language practice and focus on fostering higher-order thinking skills.
During the lesson, participants explored the principles of authenticity, relevance, learner-centeredness, and cultural appropriateness in material development. They linked these principles to SDG 4: Quality Education, emphasizing how English teaching resources can integrate global themes such as gender equality, environmental awareness, and responsible consumption.
In the practical stage, students worked collaboratively in groups to design short classroom activities connected to specific SDGs — for example, clean energy, equality, and sustainable cities. Using evaluation checklists, they analyzed the effectiveness of each activity in terms of language level, content relevance, and contribution to sustainable learning.
Through discussion and reflection, students recognized that incorporating SDG themes into teaching materials transforms the classroom into a platform for nurturing globally responsible citizens. They concluded that material evaluation is not merely a technical task, but a transformative educational process — one that prepares teachers to align their professional practice with the values of sustainability, critical thinking, and global citizenship.
This innovative lesson by Professor Dedakhanova demonstrates how the National University of Uzbekistan is embedding the principles of sustainability and global responsibility into teacher education, equipping future educators to contribute meaningfully to achieving Quality Education for All.
