Female Students Gaining Practical Skills at the University’s Vocational Sewing Center
For the past two years, the Vocational Sewing Training Center at the National University of Uzbekistan has been equipping female students with valuable hands-on skills. During this period, nearly 400 students have gained knowledge and expertise in sewing techniques—from basic stitches to the creation of complex fashion patterns.
Students from all university faculties attend the center’s classes, which are held three times a week in two shifts, allowing them to learn outside of regular academic hours.
Throughout the course, participants learn in a simplified and practical manner. Their training covers:
Taking measurements
Drafting patterns
Preparing templates
Cutting fabric
Sewing techniques
Ironing and finishing
Garment modeling
Proper use of sewing machines
This comprehensive approach allows students to gradually transform into skilled professionals.
Currently, under the guidance of their instructors, the sewing center students are producing custom bed linens, mattresses, and curtains for student dormitories. They are also sewing white lab coats for staff in the Biology, Chemistry, and Physics faculties.
“Sewing is a heritage passed down from our grandmothers—one of our most ancient and traditional crafts,” says Dono Abidova, head of the training center.
“In the past, every young woman preparing for marriage was expected to master these skills. It’s truly encouraging to see our female students dedicating time to develop their talents here. Our small center is a reflection of the growing support and attention being given to women today.”
