The official wording is to &#171;Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development&#187;.<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sustainable_Development_Goal_14#cite_note-:17-1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0The Goal has ten targets to be achieved by 2030. Progress towards each target is being measured with one indicator each.<\/p><p>The first seven targets are &#171;outcome targets&#187;: Reduce\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marine_pollution\">marine pollution<\/a>; protect and restore\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ecosystem\">ecosystems<\/a>; reduce\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ocean_acidification\">ocean acidification<\/a>;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sustainable_fishery\">sustainable fishing<\/a>;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marine_conservation\">conserve<\/a>\u00a0coastal and marine areas; end subsidies contributing to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Overfishing\">overfishing<\/a>; increase the economic benefits from sustainable use of marine resources. The last three targets are &#171;means of achieving&#187; targets: To increase scientific knowledge, research and technology for ocean health; support\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Artisanal_fishing\">small scale fishers<\/a>; implement and enforce international\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Law_of_the_sea\">sea law<\/a>.<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sustainable_Development_Goal_14#cite_note-:17-1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a><\/p><p>Oceans and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fishery\">fisheries<\/a>\u00a0support the global population&#8217;s economic, social and environmental needs.<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sustainable_Development_Goal_14#cite_note-:1-2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0Oceans are the source of life of the planet and the global climate system regulator. They are the world&#8217;s largest ecosystem, home to nearly a million known species.<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sustainable_Development_Goal_14#cite_note-:1-2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0Oceans cover more than two-thirds of the earth&#8217;s surface and contain 97% of the planet&#8217;s water.<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sustainable_Development_Goal_14#cite_note-3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0They are essential for making the planet livable.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rainwater\">Rainwater<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Drinking_water\">drinking water<\/a>\u00a0and climate are all regulated by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ocean_heat_content\">ocean heat content<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ocean_current\">currents<\/a>. Over 3 billion people depend on marine life for their livelihood. However, there has been a 26 percent increase in acidification since the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Industrial_revolution\">industrial revolution<\/a>.
